by: Gerry Kasparov

Central Theme:
Artificial intelligence is fast surpassing human intelligence. If computers an begin analyzing data, formulating questions from it, and developing solutions independent from human input, then a new revolution is in the offing.

Recommendation:
“Deep Thinking” by grandmaster Gerry Kasparov tells the story of how computer intelligence rapidly surpassed human intelligence in the game of chess. It is a strong statement on an artificial intelligence ability to surpass human intelligence in a highly complex and strategic game. And it pushes the reader to examine similar possibilities in the business world’s most prestigious professions.

Summary:
By 1977, computers could compete with the top 5% of human players, although they tended to make occasional game-losing errors. A new algorithm, called alpha-beta, allowed computers to become dramatically faster at calculating possible moves, and even created the capacity to ‘think’ several moves ahead. Fast forward to 1996, IBM’s Deep Blue defeated Gerry Kasparov by calculating an extraordinary number of possible moves and outpaced the chess champion.
